Why summer can exhaust your nervous system.

You've probably noticed it before — the paradox of summer. The season that's supposed to restore you often leaves you more depleted than January. You're sleeping more hours but waking unrefreshed. You're on holiday but can't switch off. You're getting more sunlight but running on empty.

This isn't a mindset problem. It's a biology problem. And once you understand what summer is actually doing to your nervous system, it becomes much easier to work with it rather than push against it.

The heat load your body is quietly managing

Your nervous system is, among other things, a thermostat. Maintaining core body temperature within a narrow range is a high-priority biological function — and in sustained heat, that regulation requires real physiological effort.

When ambient temperature rises, your autonomic nervous system activates cooling mechanisms: blood vessels dilate, circulation shifts toward the skin, sweat glands activate. This is your sympathetic nervous system at work — the same branch responsible for your stress response.

The problem is that prolonged heat keeps this system subtly activated. It's not the sharp spike of acute stress; it's a low-grade, continuous demand. And when the sympathetic branch is chronically engaged — even mildly — your capacity for rest, digestion, and recovery is quietly reduced. Your body is prioritising temperature management. Everything else gets less resource.

Heat stress activates overlapping neural pathways with psychological stress — which is why hot summers don't just feel physically tiring, they often feel emotionally wearing too.

What extended daylight is doing to your cortisol

Light is the primary regulator of your circadian rhythm — the internal 24-hour clock that governs nearly every physiological function, including when your body releases cortisol.

In a well-regulated cycle, cortisol peaks shortly after waking (the cortisol awakening response, or CAR) and gradually declines through the day, reaching its lowest point in the evening. This rhythm supports alertness when you need it and wind-down when you don't.

Extended summer daylight — particularly exposure to blue-spectrum light in the evening — delays melatonin production and keeps cortisol elevated later into the night.

I noticed this directly over the past two weeks. On the hottest evenings, I was restless, alert far later than usual, my body simply not ready to wind down. The last two nights — notably cooler — and I was ready for sleep by 10:30. That shift wasn't discipline or intention. It was my nervous system responding to an environmental cue it had been waiting for.

Your body receives a “it's still daytime” signal for longer than it's designed to handle.

Over days and weeks, this flattens the cortisol curve. Instead of a healthy peak-and-decline, the rhythm becomes blunted — lower in the morning when you need it, inadequately low at night when you're trying to sleep. The result is that characteristic summer feeling of being simultaneously wired and exhausted.

Why your sleep isn't recovering you

Even if you're sleeping your usual hours, summer sleep is often structurally different. Higher bedroom temperatures suppress deep slow-wave sleep — the phase responsible for physical restoration, immune function, and memory consolidation.

Your core body temperature needs to drop by approximately 1–1.5°C to initiate and maintain sleep. In warm rooms, this process is impaired. You may fall asleep, but you spend proportionally more time in lighter sleep stages and less in the slow-wave and REM sleep that actually restore you.

This is why you can sleep eight hours in July and still feel like you slept five. The hours are there; the depth isn't.

The HPA axis: your long-game stress system

Underlying all of this is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis — the body's primary stress-response system, responsible for calibrating cortisol release in response to physical and psychological demands.

Think of the HPA axis as the conductor. It receives information about temperature stress, disrupted sleep, light exposure, and perceived psychological pressure, and it adjusts the body's stress hormone output accordingly. Short-term, this is adaptive. The system responds, you cope, it recovers.

The issue arises with cumulative load — when the inputs keep coming without adequate recovery windows between them. Heat stress, poor sleep architecture, disrupted circadian rhythm, and the social demands of summer (travel, disrupted routines, children at home) are individually manageable. Stacked together, they become chronic.

HPA axis dysregulation — sometimes called HPA axis fatigue, though the mechanism is more complex than “tired adrenals” — presents as: persistent fatigue that sleep doesn't resolve, difficulty concentrating, low mood without clear cause, heightened reactivity to stress, and disrupted appetite.

Practical takeaways

These aren't quick fixes. They're evidence-informed adjustments that reduce the cumulative load on your nervous system through summer.

Manage your light environment deliberately. Use blackout blinds or an eye mask to signal darkness at the right time. Avoid screens and bright overhead lights for at least 60–90 minutes before bed. Morning sunlight exposure — within the first hour of waking — helps anchor your cortisol awakening response and keeps the rest of the rhythm more stable.

Cool your sleep environment, not just your body. A cool room matters more than cold water before bed. If air conditioning isn't available, a fan directed at the body (to support evaporative cooling), light breathable bedding, and keeping windows open in the cooler early morning hours all help lower the baseline temperature your body is working against.

Build genuine rest into the middle of the day. A 10–20 minute non-sleep rest — horizontal, eyes closed, no phone — has measurable effects on afternoon cortisol and cognitive performance. This isn't laziness. In most of the world's hotter climates, this is physiological common sense.

Reduce your total thermal load. This means being thoughtful about intense exercise in peak heat (early morning or evening is significantly less stressful on the system), staying consistently hydrated (mild dehydration amplifies the stress response), and allowing yourself to move at a slower pace — not because you're being unproductive, but because your body is already working harder than it appears to be.

Don't interpret summer fatigue as failure. Recognising that your nervous system is managing genuine physiological demands — and responding with rest rather than pressure — is not a retreat from your standards. It is the intelligent response.

Summer asks more of your nervous system than most people realise. When you understand that, the exhaustion stops feeling like weakness and starts feeling like information.
