Why I stopped chasing symptoms and started listening to my nervous system.

Why I stopped chasing symptoms and started listening to my nervous system.

For fifteen years, London was the answer to everything. A career in the creative industry. A full diary. A pace that felt, from the inside, like living.

I was running on caffeine, adrenaline, and the kind of busyness that feels purposeful because it never stops. Late working hours. Hotels. Late nights. Back-to-back. And the exhaustion that came with all of it didn't feel like a warning — it felt like the price of doing something that mattered.

My gut was constantly unsettled. My energy was a managed decline — a second coffee to get through the afternoon, a third to get through the evening. My sleep was light and broken. I was tired in a way that rest didn't fix, because the rest I was getting wasn't actually rest. My nervous system never fully came down.

I thought this was just how adult life felt. I genuinely thought everyone felt this way.

The move that changed everything

Eleven years ago, I moved to Bedfordshire. Smaller community. Quieter roads. Green space I could actually see from my window.

I won't pretend the transition was seamless. Coming from London, slow feels like stopping. But something started to shift — quietly, gradually, in a way I almost missed because I was still waiting for it to feel dramatic.

I began yoga teacher training. I started cooking more — real food, from scratch, every day. I started walking. I started sleeping properly. I started saying no to things that depleted me and yes to things that didn't.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, I started to feel like myself again.

Not the wired, caffeinated, always-on version of myself that I had mistaken for vitality.

Something quieter. Something more grounded. Something that felt — and this is the part that surprised me most — younger than I had felt fifteen years before.

The year that changed how I think

In 2022, I enrolled in the Health Coach Diploma at the College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM) — a 740-hour, completed Level 5 qualification. It was one of the most significant decisions I have ever made.

The course covered fundamental anatomy and physiology, naturopathic nutrition and the therapeutic effects of food, and how to understand movement and recovery from the body's own perspective.

Everything I had been experiencing — the depletion in London, the gradual restoration in Bedfordshire — suddenly had a framework. I wasn't just feeling better. I was beginning to understand exactly why.

What the science confirmed was what my body had already been telling me: that gut health, nutrition, sleep, and the right kind of movement are not separate lifestyle choices. They are interconnected systems.

The body has a remarkable capacity to recover — and to age better than we have been led to expect.

What I understand now

What I know now that I didn't know then is that what I was experiencing in London wasn't just stress. It was my nervous system living in a chronic state of activation — the fight-or-flight response running as a background programme, never fully switching off, slowly depleting everything: my gut, my energy, my hormones, my immune system, my sleep.

And what happened when I moved, when I slowed down,

when I started eating well and resting more and practising with intention — wasn't simply a lifestyle change. It was a nervous system reset.

My body found its way back to balance. And everything followed.

This is why I do the work I do. Not because I read about nervous system regulation in a textbook. Because I lived the cost of not understanding it — and then I lived the extraordinary difference that comes when you do.
