It starts with a signal

Every thought you have, every movement you make, every heartbeat — none of it happens without your nervous system firing an electrical signal. And those signals don't travel on willpower or good intentions. They travel on electrolytes.

Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals — sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, and phosphate — dissolved in your body's fluids. They regulate fluid balance, support muscle contraction and relaxation, maintain blood pressure, and most importantly for the work I do: they are the medium through which your nervous system communicates.

When electrolyte levels are balanced, nerve signals travel efficiently. Your muscles respond, your heart beats steadily, your brain thinks clearly. When they're depleted — which happens far more easily than most people realise, especially in summer — the entire system becomes less precise. Less regulated. More reactive.

And yet most conversations about electrolytes stop at sports performance. Drink a sports drink, replace your salts, carry on. What they rarely say is that electrolyte depletion affects your mood, your cognitive function, your capacity to manage stress, and your nervous system's ability to move between states of activation and rest.

That's the connection worth understanding.

Why summer depletes you faster

In heat, your body sweats to regulate core temperature — and sweat isn't just water. It carries sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride out of the body with it. The more you sweat, the more you lose. And if you're replacing fluid with plain water alone, you're diluting the electrolytes that remain rather than restoring balance.

This is why you can drink what feels like enough water on a hot day and still feel flat, foggy, or unreasonably irritable. It's not always dehydration in the simple sense. It's electrolyte imbalance — and the nervous system feels it first.

Symptoms worth recognising: persistent fatigue that rest doesn't fully resolve, muscle cramps or twitching, difficulty concentrating, low mood without clear cause, heightened anxiety or reactivity, disrupted sleep, and headaches. None of these are dramatic. All of them are common. And all of them improve when electrolyte balance is restored through food.

What your nervous system actually needs — and where to find it

The good news is that eating for electrolyte balance is not complicated. These are whole foods, most of which are already in a well-nourished kitchen.

Sodium — the primary electrolyte in fluid outside cells, essential for nerve impulse transmission and fluid balance. Found in: sea salt, pickles, olives. The key is quality — unrefined sea salt or Himalayan salt provides trace minerals alongside sodium that refined table salt strips out.

Potassium — works in direct balance with sodium to regulate nerve signals and muscle function, including the heart. Most people consume far too little. Found in: avocado (one of the richest sources), sweet potatoes (higher potassium content than bananas, and with more fibre and less sugar), bananas, coconut water, and wild salmon.

Magnesium — involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, and critically important for nervous system regulation. It supports the parasympathetic response — the rest and digest state — and is consistently found to be low in people experiencing chronic stress, poor sleep, and anxiety. Found in: almonds, avocado, dark leafy greens, and wild salmon.

Calcium — essential for nerve signal transmission and muscle contraction. Not just for bones. Found in: Greek yoghurt (also a source of probiotics for the gut-brain axis), almonds, and leafy greens.

Chloride — maintains fluid balance and supports the production of stomach acid, which is foundational for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. Found in: sea salt, pickles, and olives.

Phosphate — supports energy production at a cellular level and is involved in nerve function. Found in: wild salmon, Greek yoghurt, and almonds.

The foods doing the most work

Watermelon — predominantly water (92%) with potassium and magnesium, making it one of the most effective and pleasurable ways to hydrate and replenish in summer. Its citrulline content also supports blood flow and reduces post-exercise muscle soreness.

Avocado — one of the most electrolyte-dense whole foods available. Rich in potassium, magnesium, and healthy monounsaturated fats that support brain function and hormone production. The fat content also slows the absorption of sugars from other foods, supporting steadier blood glucose and a more regulated nervous system response.

Coconut water — a natural source of potassium, sodium, and magnesium with a similar electrolyte profile to human plasma. Particularly useful after exercise or significant heat exposure, and far preferable to commercial sports drinks which typically contain added sugars and artificial ingredients.

Wild salmon — brings potassium, magnesium, phosphate, and omega-3 fatty acids together in one food. The omega-3 connection matters here: EPA and DHA are structural components of nerve cell membranes and directly support the communication efficiency your nervous system depends on.

Greek yoghurt — calcium, phosphate, and live cultures that support the gut microbiome, which produces a significant proportion of the body's serotonin and communicates directly with the brain via the vagus nerve. Electrolyte support and gut-brain support in the same bowl.

Almonds — magnesium, calcium, and phosphate, with the added benefit of Vitamin E — an antioxidant that protects nerve cell membranes from oxidative damage. A small handful is nutritionally meaningful.

Sweet potatoes — potassium-rich, high in fibre, and slower to digest than regular potatoes, providing sustained energy without the blood glucose spike that stresses the adrenal system. An underrated staple.

Pickles and fermented foods — sodium, chloride, and if naturally fermented, live bacteria that support gut health. Worth noting: commercially pickled foods in vinegar are not fermented and don't carry the probiotic benefit — look for traditionally fermented options.

Lemons — potassium, Vitamin C, and the alkalising effect of citric acid once metabolised. Vitamin C also supports adrenal function — the adrenal glands have the highest concentration of Vitamin C of any organ in the body, and use it rapidly during stress.

Sea salt — used with intention, unrefined sea salt or Himalayan salt provides sodium alongside trace minerals including zinc, iron, and magnesium that refined salt removes. The goal is not to add salt liberally but to stop fearing it and use a good quality version appropriately.

Bananas — accessible, portable, and a reliable source of potassium and magnesium. Their simplicity is their strength. Riper bananas have a higher glycaemic effect, so pairing with a fat or protein source (almond butter, Greek yoghurt) steadies the blood glucose response.

A simple electrolyte-rich day of eating

This isn't a meal plan — it's a loose framework showing how easily these foods can sit across a day without any complicated planning.

Morning
Greek yoghurt with banana, a handful of almonds, and a drizzle of honey. A glass of water with fresh lemon juice and a small pinch of sea salt.

Mid-morning
Coconut water or the homemade electrolyte drink below.

Lunch
A large salad with avocado, watermelon, leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, and a lemon and extra virgin olive oil dressing. Sea salt and black pepper to finish.

Afternoon
A small handful of almonds and a piece of fruit.

Dinner
Wild salmon with roasted sweet potato and steamed greens. Simple, seasonal, complete.

Homemade Electrolyte Drink

No added sugars, no artificial ingredients. Just what your body actually needs.

Ingredients
500ml filtered or coconut water (or a combination of both)
Juice of 1 lemon or lime
1 small pinch of good quality sea salt or Himalayan salt
1 tsp raw honey (optional — provides a small amount of natural glucose which aids electrolyte absorption)
A few fresh mint leaves (optional — cooling and digestive)

Method
Combine everything, stir well, and drink at room temperature or slightly chilled. Avoid ice cold — cold liquids slow digestion and are harder for the body to absorb efficiently.

This works well first thing in the morning before coffee, after exercise, or on any hot afternoon when you notice energy starting to dip.
